Wellbeing and Pollinators
Physical Development: Building gross motor strength through active water play, dam building, and navigating outdoor obstacle courses.
Mathematics: Exploring shapes and patterns found in nature, such as the symmetry of a butterfly’s wings or the spirals in a flower.
Literacy: Engaging in outdoor storytelling sessions and "reading" the natural environment through scavenger hunt checklists.
Understanding the World: Identifying local pollinators like bees and butterflies and understanding their role in our food chain.
Expressive Arts & Design: Creating "sun prints" or using natural pigments from crushed berries and leaves for outdoor art projects.
Change and Harvest
Physical Development: Using "heavy work" like raking leaves or carrying small pumpkins to develop core strength and coordination.
Mathematics: Sorting, counting, and categorizing natural "treasures" like acorns, conkers, and multi-colored leaves by size or hue.
Communication & Language: Using seasonal transitions to prompt "why" and "how" questions about why the leaves change color and where the birds go.
Understanding the World: Investigating the process of decay and decomposition by observing how different types of seedlings and fallen leaves change over time.
Expressive Arts & Design: Exploring textures and temporary art through leaf rubbings and creating "land art" in the style of Andy Goldsworthy.
Rest and Hibernation
Physical Development: Practicing independence and self-care skills by learning to manage complex winter clothing like zips, gloves, and boots.
Mathematics: Exploring the properties of water by investigating ice, frost, and melting times in different conditions.
Literacy: Exploring "Polar Exploration" through non-fiction books about the Arctic and writing "postcards" from a winter adventure.
Understanding the World: Learning about hibernating animals and how local wildlife adapts to stay warm and find food in the cold.
PSED: Focusing on "Seasonal Celebrations" from around the world to understand different traditions, light, and togetherness.
